At Stony Brook Medicine, our Teaching and Research Center I Nurses are professional registered nurses who diagnose and treat responses to actual or potential health problems by means of nursing methods and techniques such as case finding, health teaching and counseling. Incumbents provide care supportive to and restorative of health and well-being, while adhering to a medical regimen.
Teaching and Research Center Nurse 1 provide care to patients requiring specialized nursing care in those settings where conditions and treatment are normally of a non-critical nature; when assigned to care for patients in critical care areas and work under close supervision of higher level Registered Nurses.
Position Summary: This highly competitive program is geared to the new graduate to ready themselves to work independently in a fast paced, highly acute Obstetrical department that delivers approximately 4000 newborns each year. The program is twelve months long with both didactic and hands on learning in Antepartum, Labor and Delivery and MotherBaby. The successful candidate will start their career in a Regional Perinatal Center where they will care for a patient population that includes neonates and women of childbearing years and from simple to highly complex. Stony Brook is seeking highly motivated individuals that are self-directed, goal oriented, confident, enthusiastic and ultimately patient focused. At the completion of the fellowship, the candidates will work on their shift of hire within the Women's Float Pool.
Duties of a Teaching and Research Center Nurse 1 may include the following but are not limited to:
Prepare or assist the supervisor in the preparation of a nursing plan which complements the patients comprehensive treatment plans and medical needs
Carry out treatment procedures, administer medications and observe patients conditions, note changes and reactions to nursing care, medications, and other prescribed treatments
Record and maintain patients medical records regarding nursing observations and actions taken such as nursing care, medications and treatments administered, reactions to treatments, tests, the intake and output of liquids and solids, and the patients vital signs
Record nursing needs of patients on nursing care plan to assure continuity of care
May train paraprofessional staff by way of demonstrations and the provision of written and oral instructions in the performance of nursing techniques and in the use of nursing equipment
As a member of a treatment team, the incumbent will participate in the development, implementation and revision of the patient/resident nursing care plans
In accordance with the treatment plan, carry out treatment procedures, administer medications, and observe patients conditions, changes in reactions to medications, and medical and psychiatric treatments
Screen patient by inquiring about symptoms and circumstances concerning the malady or injury, and record findings and observations on the patients records.
Assess findings and either refer patients directly to a physician in emergency cases where immediate medical attention is indicated, or initiate appropriate remedial action
Assist the physician in performing physical examinations by recording findings and providing material and equipment required for the examination and treatment
Required Qualifications: Must possess or be eligible for a license to practice as a registered nurse in New York State. New graduates only, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, successful completion of NYS NCLEX prior to hire.
Preferred Qualifications: Capstone/Practicum and/or previous healthcare experience. Community service.
