The Medical Director will provide medical leadership, direction and oversight for services provided by the Department of Public Health; contribute to medical policy, directives, and standing order development for all public health programs for the Department, including Allied, Clinical Services, and Community Health; provide direct patient care, expert medical services, and consultation; assist the Health Director in planning, organizing, and coordinating the functions and programs and advise the Board of Health on medical policy.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Duties for this position include, but are not limited to:
Provide direct clinical supervision and administrative management for physician extenders and other medical providers serving patients within the agency's clinical services.
Serve as physician back-up and cross-covers as medical provider for Child Health, Women's Health, STD clinics and wherever there is a provider shortage.
Serve as medical advisor/consultant to and provides direct medical supervision to the Department of Public Health nurses and other work unit staff serving patients both outside and within the agency.
Monitor clinic programs and service delivery to assure compliance with all applicable medical standards and guidelines.
Implement policies and procedures that are essential for clinics' function and necessary in his/her area of supervision and control.
Provide medical health education to clinical staff and public via the media, as applicable, in collaboration with Leadership Team and County PIO.
Employee is subject to be called upon anytime to help the agency respond to a public health emergency which may include, but is not limited to, outbreak investigations, staffing mass dispensing or immunization clinics, providing disaster relief, or other incidents (man-made or natural and intentional or non-intentional) as they arise, or any public health response requested by the Health Director.
Licensed to practice medicine in the State of North Carolina, board certified in the specialty area, and two years of experience in the practice of a particular specialty of medicine.

About Cumberland County Department of Public Health
The Department of Public Health provides an array of services to the citizens of the County.
Federal, State and County tax money fund the Health Department. Grants and fees for services generate additional funds. The Health Department is governed by the Cumberland County Board of Health, which is composed of up to eleven members appointed by the Board of Commissioners.
The Health Department was founded in 1911 as the Cumberland County/Fayetteville City Board of Sanitation and Health, but it had no paid employees. In 1923, a part-time physician and two nurses were hired as the first paid employees.
The Public Health Center is located at 1235 Ramsey Street and operates three satellite offices throughout the County.
