General Purpose of Job: Responsible for providing assessment, evaluation and treatment of neonates in the RNICU in collaboration with the Neonatologists.
Essential Duties: This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
1. Functions as the primary medical care provider for assigned RNICU patients by:
Assessing, planning and evaluating medical care in collaboration with the Neonatologists.
Reporting accurately and concisely in patient care rounds and problem oriented documentation.
Collaborating with health care team in planning and coordinating care for the neonate and his/her family through care conferences.
Orders diagnostic studies and therapeutic measures in collaboration with the responsible physician.
Orders medications utilizing approved NICU goals, guidelines and protocols (includes blood and blood products).
2. Attend high-risk deliveries, resuscitate and stabilize patients. 3. Determine need for and perform core specialized diagnostic, therapeutic and other procedures:
Initiate and manage cardiopulmonary resuscitation
Initiation and management of ventilatory support.
Percutaneous, radial, posterior tibial and dorsalis pedis arterial cannulation.
Urethral catheterization of the bladder
Peripheral intravenous catheter insertion.
Umbilical venous catheterization.
Umbilical artery catheterization.
Percutaneous central venous catheterization.
4. Perform the following procedures after consultation with a Neonatologist (unless a life-threatening situation):
Initiation of oscillator ventilator support.
Thoracotomy for chest tube insertion.
5. Provide direction to NNTS on transport or participate on transports when appropriate. 6. Provide consultation to Newborn Nursery and Perinatal areas.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required: Education: 1. Participate in the educational endeavors, which may include residents, students, nurses, etc. 2. Provide formal and informal educational programs in the RNICU and Division of Neonatology. 3. Initiate and pursue self-development activities through readings, lectures, formal educational programs and Division of Neonatology educational activities. List the minimum education necessary to perform the job (e.g. high school diploma/GED, Bachelors degree in Nursing, etc.)
NP with current Michigan License.
Minimal completion of a Bachelor of Science of Nursing. Masters in Pediatric or Maternal Child nursing preferred.
Completion of neonatal nurse practitioner approved program (for RN's)
Neonatal Resuscitation Program completion and BLS required.
Maintenance of certification as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner with a national certification and advanced training in neonatal medicine.
Clinical knowledge and analytical abilities necessary to formulate nursing and medical interventions.
Interpersonal skills to effectively and appropriately communicate with patients, families, physicians, nurses and other Hospital Associates.
Able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care based ton physical, psycho/social, educational, safety and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients serviced in her/his assigned service area as related to the principle duties and responsibilities of this position. The skills and knowledge needed to provide such care might be gained through education, training or experience.
Completion of Hospital credentialing.
